The Charter of Journalistic Ethics condemns the unjust verdict delivered against journalist Vakho Sanaia.
Today, October 19, Judge Tornike Kochkiani sentenced Vakho Sanaia—a journalist and news anchor at the TV channel "Formula"—to 30 days of detention. The sentence stems from two posts and one video published on his personal Facebook page. He was accused of insulting Shalva Papuashvili and Lado Bozhadze.
This marks the third time that Vakho Sanaia’s freedom of expression—in his capacity as a citizen—has been restricted. On July 22, Judge Zviad Tsekvava imposed a 14-day administrative detention for a similar "offense," while on July 10, Judge Tornike Kochkiani issued a fine of 6,000 GEL.
Repressive amendments to the legislation enable "Georgian Dream" to employ disproportionate force against critically-minded citizens, including journalists. The Charter views the case of Vakho Sanaia as an instance of the instrumentalization of legislation and the justice system for punitive purposes—aimed at silencing the critical voices of citizens and journalists, and restricting the activities of critical media.
Through legislative amendments and the subsequent practice of enforcing these changes, Georgian Dream has abandoned the obligation to exercise tolerance. With today’s decision, Georgian Dream has once again starkly demonstrated the depth of democratic backsliding in Georgia.
The Charter expresses its solidarity with Vakho Sanaia, as well as with all journalists and citizens whose freedom of expression has been curtailed by Georgian Dream through the use of legal or coercive measures.
