Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics: Patriarchate Unjustifiably Restricts the Professional Activities of TV Pirveli and Formula
The Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics considers the Patriarchate’s decision to deny TV Pirveli and Formula access during the Svetitskhovloba celebration on October 14 alarming.
The Patriarchate explained its decision by stating that journalists from these television stations frequently violate internal regulations during such events and, despite multiple warnings, leave the designated media area of their own accord. According to the Patriarchate, such unrestricted movement by journalists disrupts religious services.
According to Nodar Meladze, head of the news department at TV Pirveli, the Patriarchate did not consider it necessary to explain the legal basis or specific reasons for its decision to the station’s management. He stated that the only reference made during correspondence between the television channel and the head of the Patriarchate’s Public Relations Service was to the incident that took place in Martvili on March 8, 2021, when several journalists were injured while covering a confrontation between members of the clergy and some members of the congregation.
In the Charter’s view, drawing a parallel between this incident and the coverage of the Svetitskhovloba celebration is inappropriate.
The Charter believes that, through this decision, the Patriarchate – much like Parliament –demonstrates a discriminatory attitude toward independent television channels that maintain a critical stance toward the authorities. By barring TV Pirveli and Formula from the grounds of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral during a significant religious holiday, the Patriarchate has shown disrespect for their audiences.
The Church should not use its influence to encourage discrimination, nor should it follow Parliament’s negative example by widening the gap between journalists and their powerful respondents and making communication with the press contingent upon the latter’s goodwill.
The public’s right to be informed far outweighs any other considerations or conditions. The Charter calls on the Patriarchate to respect press freedom as a fundamental value of a democratic society and to shape its interactions with the media and journalists accordingly.
