The
Charter Responds to the Arrest of Asaval-Dasavali Journalist Dito
Chubinidze on Charges of Sabotage
On October 22, the Prosecutor’s Office, acting on a judicial
warrant, arrested Dito Chubinidze, a journalist for
Asaval-Dasavali, on charges of treason, specifically sabotage. The
agency alleges that, beginning in February 2026, he systematically
disseminated false and misleading information based on fabricated
facts across various media outlets and social media platforms.
The charge against Dito Chubinidze carries a potential prison
sentence of up to four years. The Prosecutor’s Office is seeking
his detention as a preventive measure.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Dito Chubinidze intentionally
committed sabotage to the detriment of the lawful interests of the
Georgian state, thereby obstructing the normal functioning of the
Government Commission for the Delimitation and Demarcation of
Georgia’s State Border.
Holding a journalist criminally liable on the serious charge of
high treason requires an exceptionally high evidentiary
standard.
The Charter seeks clarification as to whether the Prosecutor’s
Office has sufficient evidence to establish intent and substantiate
actual harm. Otherwise, it would appear that the case against Dito
Chubinidze is based solely on his journalistic work, interviews
with various media outlets, and opinions expressed on social media.
Subjecting a journalist to criminal prosecution on these grounds
alone would set a dangerous precedent.
The Prosecutor’s Office’s statement issued today fails to address
these questions. Consequently, the Charter will closely monitor the
evidence presented in the case, as well as compliance with the
legal standards applicable to the charge in question.
Given that this case concerns journalistic activity, the Charter
urges the Prosecutor’s Office to demonstrate greater accountability
to the public by making the evidence in the case available to the
public.
